COUSD Hires Mental Wellness Professionals for Each School Site

At Charter Oak Unified School District, we are committed to partnering with our families and students to provide a well-rounded education and essential resources, including programs directed toward mental wellness.

For the first time in our district’s 130-year history, we have hired a team of licensed therapists and clinicians at each school site to provide integrated school-based mental health support and community outreach.

Our eight Community School Program Specialists focus on:

  • Providing school mental health services
  • Implementing trauma-informed practices
  • Teaching stress management techniques
  • Collaborating to bridge gaps in student support services
  • Improving student attendance
  • Increasing parent engagement and community partnerships

Research shows that there is an increase in students experiencing traumatic events in their personal lives, which can impact their school performance. Bringing these mental health professionals on campus fosters positive climates that support the social, emotional, and physical needs of our students and their families. It also provides an opportunity for students to be nurtured in a 1:1 environment as needed while allowing the teachers to remain focused on their lesson plans.

This innovative initiative is funded by a grant we secured from the California Community Schools Partnership Program and aligned with California’s priorities for improving student outcomes. We are grateful to be one of a handful of schools in the area that received funding for the Specialists.

If you believe your student would benefit from working with one of our specialists, please contact your school site.
