Charter Oak Unified Pioneers Sports Medicine Pathway with Mt. San Antonio College

We are excited to announce a new partnership with Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) that will provide our students interested in sports medicine with an unprecedented advantage. Charter Oak High School students will soon have the opportunity to graduate with significant progress toward an associate’s degree in athletic training – the first program of its kind in the State of California!

This innovative dual enrollment program will allow our students to earn college credit through Mt. SAC’s Kinesiology Department, graduating with up to 12 college units. This head start will give our students a competitive edge as they pursue higher education and careers in the exciting field of sports medicine. The pilot is expected to start this fall.

The program will be led by Dr. Matt Simok and will offer the following courses:

  • Introduction to Care/Prevention of Activity/Sports-Related Injuries: This course covers the techniques and procedures for preventing and treating activity and sports-related injuries. Students will learn about the responsibilities of an athletic trainer, athletic training room policies and procedures, and the operation of rehabilitative modalities.
  • Fitness for Living: This course explores the fundamentals of wellness, including the five components of health-related fitness, fitness program design, nutrition, weight maintenance, and stress management. Students will have multiple opportunities for self-evaluation and will develop a solid foundation for optimal health.
  • Athletic Training Work Experience: This after-hours internship provides athletic trainer aides and physical education students with valuable on-the-job experience in an approved worksite related to classroom instruction. This course allows students to refine their skills through further instruction and practice.
  • First Aid and CPR: This course provides training in caring for victims of injuries, sudden illness, and other medical emergencies, including CPR. Students who complete all requirements will earn the appropriate American Heart Association certificate, CPR certificate, or both.
  • Advanced First Aid/CPR/Emergency Response: This advanced course provides first responder training and certifications, including laboratory experience for developing the First Aid and CPR skills required by public safety personnel, athletic trainers, emergency response team members, flight attendants, coaches, and nurses.

This groundbreaking partnership underscores Charter Oak Unified’s commitment to providing students with innovative and relevant educational opportunities that prepare them for success in college and beyond. We are excited to see the incredible achievements of our students in this program!
